Song / Worship Leading
- Atmosphere. Atmos: Vapour, Sphere: Surroundings. Therefore the words that comes out of our mouth determines the atmosphere of worship in every setting.
- As a Praise & Worship team, we should aim to create a worship atmosphere that builds faith.
- Portray to people that the faith you have can overcome the problems you are facing.
- God uses a difficult situation you are experiencing to open the hearts of others.
- The devil is hell-bent on producing an atmosphere of appealing to your flesh.
- Thermostat vs Thermometer mentality. Thermostat: changes the atmosphere. Thermometer: changed by the atmosphere. Will you be a thermostat or thermometer when on stage?
- As a thermostat, we should not care what the atmosphere is currently like, but instead focus on how we are going to change it.
- Changing the atmosphere does not start with the worship band. It starts with you and I.
- When leading worship, start with a song everyone you are leading will know, so that their hearts will be in tune and focused on Jesus. Then, introduce new songs if any.
Song Writing
- For a song to truly minister, it has to be one where a regular person can take the song home, and reflect upon it.
- The song has to hit a certain chord in the hearts of people, making it memorable.
- A song has to be accessible and easy for people to sing.
- Write songs that contain substance.
- When writing new songs, constantly communicate with God and read the Bible.
- The song has to get the people out from their current predicament into a place of freedom.
- A song, preferrably, has to let people agree with the lyrics.
- Use your life as a reference point to bless others.
- Being a songwriter takes discipline and hard work. Just like an Olympian, you might have the talent but you still need the dedication to train and nuture it.
- Do not restrict changes to your song by others. Be open to input and suggestions.
- Inspiration for lyrics can come from the spirit song. Spending personal time with God births spirit songs.
- Do not write songs for the sake of writing songs.
- When finding inspiration for a tune or melody and do not know where to start, ask God!
- With spontaneous worship, melodies will follow naturally.
- Do not force writing lyrics or a melody out. Always be sensitive and let the Holy Spirit lead.
I had to say that this workshop has blessed me immensely, to know the thought process of great worship leaders and songwriters like Henry Seeley and Joth Hunt. Before the workshop, I had always wanted to discover how Henry Seeley was inspired to compose the song Beautiful Saviour which impacted me greatly and is a powerful song of exaltation. It was great that he explained all these pointers and how being constantly connected to God has spurred him on to continue writing songs. Song writing has never been my forte, but I am glad that I have come to understand a bit more the essence of writing praise and worship songs for Him.
